Black Sky Venture (BSV1) | RACHEL ARMSTRONG | PROJECTIONARY: 'BIOSPHERE III'

Biosphere III follows on from the BIOS-3 project in the 1970s in Krasnoyarsk, Russia and the Biosphere II project which was conducted in the early 1990s in Arizona, USA. Both projects were closed environmental systems that explored the construction of ‘artificial’ ecologies in which human missions were confined. The very powerful take-home message of both these projects is that, despite being on a life-bearing planet, we are unable to build an ecosystem in a sealed environment that will indefinitely support humans. |

Biosphere III aims to represent a new kind of built ecology design where prototype systems are developed as part of the building itself to explore alternative forms of sustainable architecture - where sustainability does not represent the better performing of machines - but the life-promoting activities within a space. Biosphere III aims to inform the design of our future cities in which the built and living environments are one and mutually reinforce each other.
